On July 30, 2026, at least nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A surge of people flooded the border. Spanish troops were called in after authorities could not handle the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities stated that about 40,000 migrants entered on foot, approximately half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union declared Frontex would assist and asked Morocco to leaving by ship and road. Spanish forces kept the flow under control and strived to halt additional loss of life.
